Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM)
OVERVIEW
The American Cancer Society (ACS) declares October as breast cancer awareness month. BCAM is a time to raise public awareness about breast cancer prevention and early detection. ACS encourages women to get screened regularly for breast cancer.
Early Detection
Early detection is the best way to treat breast cancer. A mammogram is the only test recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force to detect breast cancer at its earliest stage. Mammograms should be done annually beginning at age 40.
Women who have had a first-degree relative diagnosed with breast cancer before age 50 may want to consider having a genetic test to determine if they carry the BRCA 1 or 2 gene mutation. If a woman carries the BRCA 1 gene mutation, she has a higher risk of developing breast cancer than those without the mutation.
Treatment Options
Treatment options depend on the type of breast cancer detected. Surgery is often the primary treatment option for breast cancer. Radiation therapy may be used after surgery to kill any remaining cancer cells.
Chemotherapy is sometimes used to shrink tumors before surgery. Hormone therapy may be prescribed to prevent recurrence of breast cancer.
Prevention
There are several ways to lower your risk of breast cancer. Avoiding exposure to radiation and X-rays is one way to reduce your risk. Also avoid using hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
Other factors that increase your risk of breast cancer include being overweight, not exercising, drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and having a family history of breast cancer.
7 ways to show your support during breast cancer awareness month :
1. Wear Pink
Wear pink! Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women in their lifetime, and many don’t know they have it until it’s too late.
By wearing pink, you are showing solidarity with those who have been affected by this disease and encouraging others to get checked out if they notice any changes in their breasts.
2. Donate to the American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society is dedicated to saving lives and ending cancer forever. Every dollar donated goes directly to research, prevention, education, advocacy and services.
3. Spread Awareness
Spread awareness about breast cancer by sharing information on social media using BCAMember and tagging @ACS_Cancer
4. Get Screened
If you think you may have breast cancer, schedule a mammogram today. Mammograms are the best way to detect early stage breast cancer before symptoms appear.
5. Know Your Risk Factors
Know your risk factors for developing breast cancer. Early detection is key to survival rates.
6. Talk to Your Doctor
Talk to your doctor about your family history of breast cancer. If you have a strong family history, ask your doctor about genetic testing.
7. Be Active
Get active. Exercise regularly and limit alcohol consumption. Being physically fit lowers your risk of breast cancer.
